Thematic Priorities

Through a thoughtful balancing of Government of Canada G7 objectives and international civil society concerns, we’ve curated a list of thematic priorities and established dedicated working groups to tackle them.

Climate, Energy & Environment

The escalating climate crisis has made extreme weather events more frequent, causing significant hardship and permanently altering the lives of millions. Equally critical is the decline of nature and biodiversity, alongside numerous other environmental challenges that jeopardize the survival of all species, including humanity. G7 governments must ambitiously advance and implement the concrete actions outlined in the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to address these urgent issues.

The C7 Working Group on Climate, Energy and the Environment focuses on topics, using a just and integrative approach, such as:

  • Adaptation to Climate Change
  • Climate Financing
  • Just Transition to Renewable Energy
  • Biodiversity Loss

Economic Justice

The economic models of the past — dominated by hyper-globalization, deregulated free trade, globalized supply chains and the digital economy controlled by Big Tech — have prioritized economic growth at any cost, serving the interests of a privileged few while exacerbating inequality and environmental degradation. This model has proven unsustainable, and solutions must feature fair financing models for developing countries.

The C7 Working Group on Economic Justice advocates for a profound rethinking of the global economic, trade and financial architecture, focusing on issues such as:

  • Fair Tax Policies
  • Trade Justice
  • Debt Relief and Restructuring
  • Access to Concessional Finance
  • Climate Finance Mechanisms
  • Reforms of Multilateral Development Banks

Humanitarian Action & Peace

The humanitarian system continues to be stretched, with 300 million people worldwide need emergency assistance and protection at the beginning of 2024, while simultaneously being under pressure within a complex and politicized environment. It is also grappling with how to increase the voice and agency given to those affected by the crisis, the role and leadership of local actors in preparedness and response, and how the system relates to other political, development and climate processes. Global Security Policies crafted by G7 leaders should prioritize civilian protection and the reinforcement of positive peace, paving the way for a genuinely safer and more stable world.

The C7 Working Group on Humanitarian Assistance and Peace aims to raise awareness for humanitarian and peace issues by focusing on topics such as:

  • Additional Resources for Humanitarian Aid
  • Humanitarian Access and a More Effective Humanitarian System
  • Collective Ambition for a Shared Global Security
Sustainable Development

Sustainable Development

The world is dangerously off-track to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Fewer than 1 in 5 targets is progressing as expected and over a third have stalled or even regressed. While some movements have been achieved since 2015, many goals have seen regression, including education and food security, and others have stagnated, including health. World leaders, reunited in the G7 this year, must progress towards the long-promised delivery of sustainable development for all by fostering and adequately financing international cooperation.

The C7 Sustainable Development Working Group will look to tackle issues related to, among others:

  • Food Security and Nutrition
  • Global Health
  • Education
