C7 Handover Event

Cooperation Canada’s leadership of the C7 has officially started. The handover event, attended by almost 200 participants, was organized as a space to look back on the important work done in 2024 and set the stage to present Cooperation Canada’s plans for its 2025 presidency.

Looking Back

Looking back at 2024, coordinators from the Climate, Peace and Economic Justice working groups presented their recommendations, while making the important link to other global moments, such as the disappointing COP29 and the significance of FfD4 next year.

Crucially, we also heard from Bond UK on the dynamic role of the country networks both during their country’s presidency of the G7 and during off years. She advised finalizing recommendations early in the G7 process and tailoring the C7 Communiqué’s recommendations to align with their governments' priorities.

Looking ahead

Cooperation Canada presented its vision for a focused, impactful C7 centred around four priority and three cross-cutting themes. Guided by principles of inclusivity, transparency and impact, a C7 Summit will be convened in April in Ottawa to validate the C7 Communiqué and present our recommendations to the Sherpa and the G7 diplomatic community.

In the run-up to 2025, a high priority has been placed on forging solid lines of communication with the G7 team at Global Affairs Canada, with the aim to have our recommendations appear at the negotiating table. We were thankful that the Canadian G7 Sous-Sherpa, Martin Lajoie, delivered remarks on Canada’s plans for the G7 and links with civil society.

Kate Higgins, CEO of Cooperation Canada, highlighted the global significance of 2025 and urged civil society to leverage the G7 as a platform to advance key recommendations in forums like Beijing+30, the International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4), the G20 and COP30.
